On Sunday night, we had the absolute delight to get to see Crosby, Stills and Nash and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers at Jiffy Lube Live (formerly known as Nissan Pavilion) in northern VA. After being annoyed by the incredibly retarded traffic heading into the show – it took us 40 minutes to get the last mile – and missing the first song and a half of CSN’s set, we settled into a space on the lawn and started enjoying some music. David’s thoughts – and I have to admit I agree with him – were that Crosby was over-miked and Stills has largely lost his vocal abilities. Nash is still doing okay. And the extra special bonus was that Stills is still a friggin’ guitar GOD, and all three of them still had all their hearts in it, which made it a pretty amazing show in and of itself.
And then. Oh my. Speaking of rock gods. There was Tom Petty. And the Heartbreakers, of course. They performed a lot of their crowd favorites, including making the crowd wait for “American Girl” until the very last song of their encore. They also did a rockin’ rendition of four songs from their new album, Mojo. And my very, very favorite of the night, quite unexpectedly, was “Breakdown.” Not because I dislike that song – not at all – I just don’t think about it very often at all. But they did an amazing performance, definitely the best performance of that song I’ve ever heard.
All in all, it was a fantastic experience, and seeing Petty live is something I’d gladly do again. Highly recommended to anyone who is still on his remaining tour route this summer!
